A Philanthropic Giant From The White House – Betsy DeVos

People who have achieved great heights in their careers are not hard to find. Successful individuals who also mastered the art of helping others, however, are extremely rare. One such individual is the current United States Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos.

DeVos has been in the circles of the Republican Party since 1982. She started her endeavors in 1982 in Michigan, and she served as many as 16 consecutive two-year terms. Interested in politics since her college career, she assisted in extra curricular activities within this field even though her Bachelor’s Degree was in Economics.

Although Devos was born to an extremely wealthy family and continues to be one of the richest people in Michigan, she has dedicated her life to public service. She is married to Richard Marvin DeVos, a multimillionaire heir to a marketing company, whom she has two daughters and two sons with.

Regardless of her financial and political success, Betsy DeVos is also one of the biggest philanthropists nationwide.

Funding Schools

DeVos has a foundation that is run by a joint effort with her husband. Formed in 1989, they have donated tens of millions of dollars to various causes. One of those includes Success Academy Charter Schools that have received over $150,000 from the couple. Some other smaller donations are also common with the couple, such as donating $5,000 to GREAAT Schools, Inc.

Religious Causes

As a conservative-oriented Republican that DeVos has been portrayed throughout the course of her career, she has some traditional values that follow along. DeVos is a Christian that has been dedicated to helping churches around the country. An example is a $200,000 donation to a Christian school Potter’s House.

Washington, D.C.

Devos’ presence in the government is not the first time she played that role. On many occasions in the past, her foundation donated millions of dollars to undisclosed as well as public entities that supported the Republican Party’s endeavors. This was to ensure that the candidates she supports have an upper hand in the election process.

Higher-education Institutitons

One of the longest lists of entities that the couple has donated to ARE various universities around the country. Ferris State University, Davenport University, University of Michigan’s Food Allergy Center, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and a dozen others received anywhere from $10,000 to over $100,000 in donations. Furthermore, the foundation promised a lot more money to the majority of these facilities in the future.

The list of organizations that have received help, courtesy of Betsy’s philanthropical efforts, goes on and on. Currently, she has divided her focus on serving as the United States Secretary of Education, but it does not seem like her charitable contributions are finished.
